Jigsaw Activity Substances

The students were placed into four groups, consisting of seven students, using cards. Each group of seven students read and discussed the information presented about one of the following substances:

    Petroleum

    Soaps and Detergents

    Plastics

    Acids

They were to find out the following:

Whether the substance was naturally occurring or synthetic.

How it was produced or refined.

    What it was used for.

    Its importance to society.

Any environmental factors associated with it.

    Future uses or concerns.

When this discussion was completed the 'expert' in each substance returned to their original group of four and presented their information to this group. At the end of the activity the students were asked to write a paragraph or two on each substance.
