mixing and separating

Unit overview: Students will look at the properties of mixtures and solutions, their uses in everyday life and then research a recent oil spill.

Main Scientific Principle within this unit is to identify the properties of various, commonly used household substances and relate this to the substances possible environmental impact.

Context: This unit of work was written for 150 Year 8 science students, all girls and of mixed ability. There are a wide variety of socio-economical groups within this Year 8 population, mostly students of Australian born parents with a few ESL students (both European and Asian).
Key Idea:

1. Students communicate understandings about the properties and personal uses of materials….current patterns of use.
2. Students pose questions to investigate ways in which physical and chemical processes can be altered in order to achieve desirable outcomes, …..preservation.
