Unit overview: Students will look at the properties of mixtures and solutions, their uses in everyday life and then research a recent oil spill. Main Scientific Principle within this unit is to identify the properties of various, commonly used household substances and relate this to the substances possible environmental impact.

| Context: This unit of work was written for 150 Year 8 science students, all girls and of mixed ability. There are a wide variety of socio-economical groups within this Year 8 population, mostly students of Australian born parents with a few ESL students (both European and Asian). |
