task 2

TASK TWO
A teacher directed PRACTICAL INVESTIGATION on Coffee mugs

This activity gives the teacher excellent background information on the student’s skills in relation to the Working Scientifically Strand.

Particularly in the organisers:

*Planning investigations

*Conducting investigations

*Processing data

*Evaluating findings

Note that these practical investigations will not look at the last two organisers.

The following table should be filled in for each student, and kept for reference against the next practical investigation.

Later, after collecting and inspecting the results of the student investigations there will be an opportunity for teacher to help individuals and groups with various aspects of

working scientifically, in particular:

* identifying variables * controlling variables * developing a procedure *accurate measurement of temperature, time and volume *recording of data *tabulating results *planning for effective outcomes *evaluating their results *presentation in other forms (written, graphical ) *some reasonable suggestions for improvement.

This preliminary activity should form a basis from which the student can improve.

WHAT LEVEL ARE MY STUDENTS WORKING AT?

A ready reference to the types of activities that you students will be able to perform is given in the Working Scientifically Checklist
