Testing sport drink samples

Testing for Carbohydrates -Starches

1.   Place a small amount of each drink into a jar.

2.   Add one drop of iodine to a drink sample.

3.   Watch for a colour change.

4.   If the iodine turns black, starch is present.

5.   If it stays reddish brown, no starch is present.

6.   Record your results.

7.   Repeat the steps for the other drink samples.

Testing for Carbohydrates - Sugars

1.   Place a small amount of each drink into a jar.

2.   Add one drop of Benedict's solution to a drink sample.

3.   Watch for a colour change.

4.   If the Benedict's solution turns a very dark blue-green, sugar is present.

5.   If the colour is light blue-green, no sugar is present.

6.   Record your results.

7.   Repeat the steps for the other drink samples.

Testing for Fat

1.   Place a small amount of drink onto a piece of white paper.

2.   Inspect the mark left behind by the drink.

3.   If the mark is translucent, fat is present.

4.   If the mark is wet but not translucent, no fat is present.

5.   Record your results.

6.   Repeat the steps for the other drinks.
