In this series, we’re featuring Oliphant Science Awards Coordinators who once participated in the competition themselves as students. Their stories highlight how the Oliphants continue to inspire a lifelong passion for science, creativity, and learning.

When did you first become involved in the Oliphant Science Awards as a student?
I believe I first became involved in the Oliphant Science Awards in 2011 as a Year 10 student, I then entered again in Year 11 and 12.
What projects did you undertake, what were they about, and what did you achieve through them?
My most successful project focused on genetic modification. It explored how altering an organism’s DNA can influence traits and outcomes, particularly in relation to agriculture and food production. Through this project, I developed strong research and analytical skills and gained confidence in communicating scientific ideas clearly in my writing.
What did you enjoy most about participating in the Oliphant Science Awards as a student?
What I enjoyed most was the opportunity to undertake deep learning in a topic I was genuinely interested in. It allowed me to move beyond surface-level understanding and really explore the science in depth. The awards ceremonies were also a lot of fun!
When and how did you become involved in the Oliphant Science Awards as a teacher?
During my time at university, I was involved as a judge in the Reception to Year 1 Poster category, which gave me a different perspective on the program and further reinforced its value. As a teacher, I have become involved in the Oliphant Science Awards because I want my students to have the same experience and opportunities I had.
What do you hope your students and your school will gain from participating in this year’s Oliphant Science Awards?
As a country school, I am always looking for opportunities that allow my students to explore beyond our local community. Through participation in the Oliphant Science Awards, I hope students gain confidence, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for science, as well as the chance to showcase their abilities on a broader stage.
