The Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA) has released a new position paper exploring how Australia can strengthen its long-term science capability through education reform.

Titled Strengthening Australia’s Sovereign Science Capability Through Genuine Education Reform, the paper examines the relationship between student participation in senior science and mathematics, teacher workforce challenges, and Australia’s future STEM capability.

The paper highlights concerns around declining participation in senior secondary science and mathematics subjects, ongoing teacher shortages, and the broader pressures experienced within current senior secondary systems.

Drawing on international examples, including British Columbia in Canada, the paper explores approaches that prioritise formative assessment, student growth, and broad participation in science and mathematics through the senior years of schooling.

Importantly, the paper centres the role of teachers in supporting student learning and highlights the importance of learning environments that foster curiosity, engagement, and confidence in science. As noted in the foreword, effective science learning is strengthened when students are motivated by curiosity, relevance, and supportive learning environments.

The paper proposes several recommendations for consideration and discussion within the education community, including ideas related to senior secondary participation, assessment structures, and long-term STEM capability development.

The release of this paper contributes to an ongoing national conversation about how Australia can best prepare young people for a future increasingly shaped by science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

SASTA encourages members and educators to read the paper and consider the ideas and questions it raises for the future of science education in Australia.
