Year 8 Ediacaran Unit

This unit of work supports the teaching of Year 8 Earth and Space Science

Fossils of Ediacara organisms have been discovered in some 30 localities over five continents, including seven sites in North America. The principal occurrence is in South Australia’s Flinders Ranges, and in particular at Nilpena, where more than 1,500 well-preserved specimens have been collected. This unit is a teaching resource that will engage students with what is happening in their own backyard.

Among the resources is a new virtual interactive tour travelling back into Flinders Ranges history and exploring the fossils of Nilpena. Students will also be able to view 3D reconstructions of the ancient animals and virtually swim through their seafloor habitat. It is the next best thing to bringing 600-million-year-old fossils back to life, and hopefully inspire a new generation of budding geologists to follow in the footsteps of Reg Sprigg.
