Integrating Science and Technology in Zoo-Based Learning

Flinders University, in collaboration with Zoos SA, is offering STEAM professional development opportunities for educators. One of the upcoming workshops, Zoo STEAM Teach, will provide teachers with innovative ways to integrate science and technology curriculum using zoo environments as real-world learning contexts.

Duration: 9.00am – 3pm
Price: $65 for Department for Education teachers, $75 for non-department teachers

The Science of ‘Black and White’ Animals at the Zoo

This session, delivered by Dr. Timna Garnett, explores the biological science possibilities within the zoo setting, focusing on digital documentation techniques and the features and behaviours of key species.

Participants will engage in:

  • A guided walking tour of black and white animals at Adelaide Zoo with connections to biological sciences.
  • Science storytime at the zoo, fostering new perspectives on animal behaviour.
  • Data collection exercises, using scientific techniques to record animal characteristics and behaviours (ethograms).
  • Data analysis discussions, exploring ways to apply findings in classroom settings for authentic problem-solving.
  • Photography and video techniques, learning how to digitally document zoo animals for use in science and digital technologies education.
