Term 3 Week 4 at Mary MacKillop College was filled with curiosity, creativity and discovery as we celebrated National Science Week.

This year’s theme, “Decoding the Universe: Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Language”, linked perfectly with the 2025 International Year of Quantum Technologies, inspiring interest across the school.

Displays and Resources

The library featured a display prepared by Ms Papp (Library Assistant) and Sharon (Laboratory Assistant), showcasing fascinating species, the periodic table and patterns in nature. A long with “must read” science themed book recommendations. Women in STEM posters surrounded all areas of the library to encourage students to think about future possibilities, while science-themed word searches and colouring activities were available throughout the week.

In the Tenison Centre, students explored our mini solar system display and read fact sheets on “Our Solar System’s Hidden Language”, highlighting the unique features of our solar system.

Highlights of the Week

  • Staff Morning Tea & Science Quiz provided friendly competition and plenty of laughs.
  • Years 10–12 Admin Quiz – tested their knowledge in a Science Week-themed challenge, with 11 Green taking the win.
  • Years 7 & 8 PC – enjoyed the livestream and interactive STEM Mania show, followed by a quiz night themed event.
  • All week – Morning notices featured daily trivia questions and interesting science facts for all students.

Wrapping Up

National Science Week was about more than experiments and quizzes - it was a chance to explore ideas, ask questions and see how science connects to the world around us. From displays in the Library and Tenison Centre to the hands-on activities in classrooms, there was something engaging for everyone.

Thank you to our Science staff for their effort and creativity and well done to all students for participating with enthusiasm.
