From Dioramas to the Stars: Celebrating Science Week at Torrens Valley Christian School

Science Week was an exciting time at Torrens Valley Christian School! The theme this year being “Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature's hidden language”, gave students the opportunity to explore the intricacies and hidden patterns within God’s creation. Across the week, students from all year levels participated in engaging presentations, immersive excursions and lunchtime STEM challenges that brought science to the forefront of our school community.

As part of a callout to design and produce a science project, our Year 4’s created dioramas illustrating the water cycle. These were displayed in a shared space, allowing the wider school community to learn from their work and offer some warm feedback.

Our Middle School students showed care and hospitality by taking primaries out for a scavenger hunt around the school. Students had to find various informative science posters and use a hidden letter on each poster to decode a hidden message. It was a delight to see the students not only learning together, but the Middle Schoolers stepping up and showing leadership and service.

Our Year 7’s and 8’s had the opportunity to go out and learn more about our universe, visiting the Australian Space Discovery Centre (Year 7’s), as well as the Adelaide Planetarium (Year 8’s). There, the students heard about how Australia is contributing to helping us understand God’s wonderful universe, as well as getting awed by the absolute wonder of God’s creation and space.

Further, our Secondary school (7-12) students had the pleasure of hearing from Dr. James Botten, from the School of Biological Sciences at The University of Adelaide. He shared about his work in decoding viruses and bacteria to support better treatment of disease, as well as how his faith supports his science.

In addition to all this, students took part in engaging and informative STEM activities, Escape Rooms and challenges, during break times and lessons. It was a great week, yet the best part was seeing the inspired curiosity, enthusiasm and community across our school.
