This year, East Marden Primary School proudly hosted its annual Science Spectacular during Science Week, an event that captivated and inspired our entire school community. With the support of an ASTA Science Week grant, and a dedicated team of passionate staff and or schools wonderful Year 6 STEM Leaders, the event featured engaging hands-on activities led by our talented students, showcased impressive student work, and highlighted the exciting career paths that science can offer.

Students participated in a variety of scientific activities, including:

Slime Making: A perennial favourite, this messy activity delighted young and old. Students explored how combining glue with activator could make slime. Some students even explored when the optimal time was to add shaving foam to make puffy slime.

Microbiology: Students crafted viruses and bacteria from playdough and examined specimens under microscopes.

Racing Forces: Using magnets, students explored the forces of push and pull to navigate a LEGO race car through a track without touching it.

Camouflage Butterflies Students designed camouflage for butterflies, challenging birds (and teachers) to find them

Invisible Ink: With highlighter ink and water, students created images revealed under black light, observing how some colours shone brighter than others.

Dinosaur Dig:  Students unearthed dinosaur fossils from sand trays, pieced together puzzles, and invented new dinosaur species.

Our LEGO League teams and STEM Club leaders also guided students through enriching STEM experiences, including a Beebot coding activity and using block code to guide a robot through a maze. The event featured an impressive display of student work, including 85 entries for the Oliphant Science Awards and the Year 1 Mary Anning Art competition.

We were also fortunate to have many of our parents join us on the night to share their professional experiences in science. Students engaged with geologists, coders, immunologists, and bioengineers, who all shared their passion for science and spoke about how they use science in their careers.
