2025 Conceptualising Concepts in Primary Science
2025 Conceptualising Concepts in Primary Science
Presenter: Anthea Ponte & Denise Rule, Department for Education
How do science concepts develop in young minds? How do they build across year levels? And how can teachers design learning that moves beyond facts to deep, transferable understanding?
This practical, curriculum-aligned workshop invites primary educators to shift from topic coverage to conceptual teaching. Using the Australian Curriculum: Science V9 as our anchor, we explore how key scientific ideas evolve over time, how to identify common student misconceptions, and how to design learning that builds conceptual understanding through investigation, reasoning, and reflection.

Description
Together, we’ll explore the key ideas in primary science and examine how core concepts progress from Reception to Year 6. Using tools and resources to support rich science learning in diverse and composite classrooms teachers will leave with greater confidence in:
- Recognising and teaching the big ideas of science
- Navigating the conceptual progressions in the R–6 curriculum
- Anticipating and addressing common misconceptions
- Designing learning opportunities that move beyond facts to connected, transferable ideas
Whether you're aiming to deepen your own conceptual understanding, refine how you teach the big ideas of science, or lead others in curriculum-aligned practice, this workshop equips you with practical strategies, curriculum clarity, and inquiry-driven tools to design learning that is meaningful, developmentally appropriate, and conceptually connected across Reception to Year 6.
