Students across Australia are invited to explore the fascinating world beneath our feet through the Soil Week Australia Schools Competition.

This competition encourages students to investigate the importance of healthy soil and its connection to food production, ecosystems and the environment. Through creative or research-based projects, students can demonstrate their understanding of soil as a living system and the vital role it plays in supporting life on Earth.

Entries can be completed by individual students, small groups or whole classes, and projects can take many forms. Past examples have included artwork, poems, presentations, school garden investigations and other creative responses that explore soil health and the web of life within the soil.

All participating students receive a certificate of participation, with winning entries receiving special certificates and prizes for their school.

Projects should demonstrate an understanding of topics such as:

  • The living organisms that exist within soil
  • What makes soil healthy or unhealthy
  • The connection between soil, food and the environment
  • Actions that help protect and improve soil health

Entries are submitted digitally, with physical projects photographed and uploaded as part of the submission.

Teachers and students are encouraged to use the provided competition resource pack and undertake their own research as they explore the theme.
