Celebrating South Australia's Place in the Story of Life

SASTA is proud to partner with the Flinders Ranges Ediacara Foundation to help raise awareness of one of South Australia's most significant scientific discoveries, the Ediacaran biota.

The fossils discovered in the Flinders Ranges provide evidence of some of the earliest complex life on Earth and have transformed our understanding of the history of life. Recognised globally for their scientific importance, the Ediacara fossils continue to inspire researchers, educators and students alike.

Through our partnership, SASTA and the Flinders Ranges Ediacara Foundation are working together to share this remarkable story with schools across South Australia, helping students connect with their state's unique scientific heritage. This includes supporting teacher professional learning, developing curriculum resources, promoting student engagement opportunities, and raising awareness of the Ediacaran biota as a globally significant part of South Australia's scientific heritage.

Supporting Teacher Professional Learning

Since 2024, the Flinders Ranges Ediacara Foundation has supported the Ediacaran Teacher Scholarship to the Flinders Ranges, providing teachers with a unique opportunity to experience one of Australia's most significant fossil regions firsthand.

The scholarship supports educators to deepen their understanding of the Ediacaran Period, explore the geological and palaeontological significance of the Flinders Ranges, and bring authentic scientific learning experiences back to their classrooms.

2026 marks the third year of this successful scholarship program, which continues to inspire teachers and strengthen the teaching of Earth and space sciences across South Australia.

Supporting Student Engagement

The Flinders Ranges Ediacara Foundation is also supporting the 2026 Oliphant Science Awards Commemorative Science Writing Topic, encouraging students to explore the significance of the Ediacaran biota and South Australia's contribution to our understanding of life's earliest complex organisms.

Through science writing, students are challenged to investigate, reflect and communicate scientific ideas while engaging with an internationally significant chapter of South Australia's scientific story.

Ediacara Resources for Teachers

To support teachers in bringing this remarkable story into the classroom, SASTA has developed a dedicated collection of Ediacara resources available through the Members Area.

Developed in partnership with the Flinders Ranges Ediacara Foundation and other experts in the field, these resources help students explore South Australia's unique fossil heritage and understand why the Ediacaran biota is recognised as one of the world's most significant palaeontological discoveries.

SASTA members can access these resources through the Members Area.

Inspiring Future Generations

The partnership between SASTA and the Flinders Ranges Ediacara Foundation reflects a shared commitment to promoting scientific literacy, celebrating South Australia's unique natural heritage, and inspiring curiosity about the world around us.

By supporting teachers and students to engage with the story of the Ediacaran biota, we are helping ensure that future generations understand the significance of these extraordinary discoveries and their place in the global history of life.
