Bringing the Story of the Ediacaran Biota to Life

Fossil Rock is an innovative educational video series developed by SeaStarRock that introduces students to the fascinating story of the Ediacaran biota and South Australia's globally significant fossil heritage.

Through engaging storytelling, animation and scientific content, the series explores the remarkable fossils discovered in South Australia's Flinders Ranges and their significance in understanding the earliest complex life on Earth. By making complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging, Fossil Rock helps students connect with one of the most important chapters in the history of life.

SASTA is proud to have contributed to the development of the accompanying teacher resources, supporting educators to bring this extraordinary South Australian science story into their classrooms.

About the Series

The Ediacaran fossils found in South Australia provide evidence of some of the earliest complex life forms on Earth and have given their name to the Ediacaran Period, recognised internationally by geologists and palaeontologists.

Fossil Rock helps students explore these ancient organisms, the environments in which they lived, and the discoveries that have transformed our understanding of early life. Through a combination of science, storytelling and creativity, the series encourages curiosity, critical thinking and an appreciation for scientific discovery.

Supporting Teachers

SASTA worked with the Fossil Rock team to develop curriculum-aligned teacher resources that support classroom use of the series.

These resources provide practical learning activities, discussion prompts and opportunities for students to further investigate the science behind the videos. Together, the videos and supporting materials help teachers engage students with one of South Australia's most significant scientific discoveries.

Looking Ahead

The Fossil Rock project continues to grow, with Episodes 4 to 6 scheduled for release later in 2026.
